Hospitality businesses don’t come in one shape, so why should the technology that runs them?

That’s the question at the heart of our latest episode of The Connected Shift, where we sat down with Ruby Mina from Lightspeed to talk about ecosystems, integrations, and why trying to force every operator into the same system just doesn’t work.

An ecosystem built on choice

Lightspeed’s whole product philosophy is built around partnerships rather than doing everything itself. As Ruby explains, every hospitality business is set up differently, and no single piece of technology can solve every operator’s problems.

That’s why Lightspeed has invested in strong integrations with specialist, best-in-class platforms like Bizimply, giving operators the choice and flexibility to build a tech stack that suits them, not the other way round. And as a business grows and its needs change, that stack needs to be able to grow with it, rather than forcing a system the operator has to grow around.

Why the connection matters more than the tools

Having the best individual tools only gets you so far. The real value comes when they actually talk to each other.

The Bizimply and Lightspeed integration pulls sales data straight into Bizimply in daily, hourly, or even 15-minute increments, so managers get an accurate sales-to-labour percentage without lifting a finger. That single feed removes a huge admin burden and feeds directly into better forecasting and demand planning.

Before integrations like this, Ruby says operators were often relying on guesswork: manually reconciling spreadsheets, or running systems that simply didn’t talk to one another. That meant more reactive decision-making, more admin, and a much higher risk of overstaffing, because there was no real visibility into the business.

Once the systems are connected, operators can finally use their data properly. It supports smarter scheduling decisions, cuts out manual admin, and reduces the risk of inaccurate staffing that costs time and money. Ultimately, it protects the operation and helps businesses run more consistently.

Who benefits most?

We put this one to Ruby directly: is this kind of integration more valuable for multi-site groups, or single-site, high-volume operators?

Her answer: anyone who wants tighter control over labour versus revenue, and who’s dealing with any real complexity in the business. That said, she does see it as particularly powerful for multi-site operators, who need one source of truth across locations to keep everything connected. But really, it’s for any ambitious operator that wants tools built to support their growth.

Ruby's tip for this week

For any ops manager or business owner still manually re-keying data between systems, Ruby’s advice is simple: start by figuring out what problem you actually want to solve. Then quantify it. How often is the task done? Who does it? How much time and money is it costing? Once you know that, it’s much easier to work out what technology can solve it, and who you need to solve it with.
